Term 3, Week 7 Friday 9th September 2022
Wednesday 7th September was Early Childhood Educators Day. We have amazing Early Childhood Educators at St Margaret Mary’s School and Preschool.
We recognise and celebrate the work of our educators in our Playgroup, Occasional Care and Preschool for their wonderful contribution to the wellbeing and healthy development of the young children in their care.
This week, our very own Vicky Manalo from our Playgroup has been featured on the CESA website for her work in our Playgroup this year.

Vicky and Nikki have always prepared great activities for our youngest members of our community. Playgroup runs every Friday from 9.15-10.30am in the Preschool. No bookings necessary!
Next week we have our Parent/Teacher Conversations. Please ensure you have made a booking to meet with your child’s teacher. A strong partnership between school and home is very important for your child’s wellbeing and learning. These conversations give parents/carers a chance to discuss learning progress and for teachers to share celebrations of learning and areas for future focus or intervention.
Throughout the school, students are engaging in the Child Protection Curriculum. As a community, it is timely to also remind parents/carers of some safety tips to discuss with children in an age-appropriate way.
Students and families are reminded to be wary of approaches from strangers, especially when they are unaccompanied or travelling to and from school. If they are approached students should not respond and should not accept offers of rides or gifts.
Students should seek the assistance of other nearby adults if they feel unsafe and should report the event to a trusted adult (parent or school staff member) as soon as possible.
SAPOL advises that taking out a mobile phone and calling police can deter the offender and they recommend the student making a formal report to their closest police station.
Thank you for your continued support,
Kelly Campbell
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
In recent weeks, our Year 3 and Year 4/5 classes have celebrated morning Masses with our parish community. The children’s confident participation as readers and joyous voices as singers has been wonderful to see. Special thanks to my colleagues for all their support behind the scenes to prepare the children for these parish experiences.
Parish Sacramental Program
Congratulations to the 15 students who participated in this year’s parish sacramental program. Special thanks to our families who prepared the children for their First Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Communion. Many colleagues attended these sacraments to join the children and their families in these special celebrations.
Farewell Eleni
On behalf of our SMMS Community, I would like to thank Eleni Vailas for the energy and creativity she has brought to the role of Sacramental Coordinator at Croydon Park Parish. Recently, Eleni announced her decision to return to her substantive position as Deputy Principal at Catherine McAuley. Eleni will be missed by all, and we wish her all the best in her return to Catherine McAuley.
Journey to Emmaus
In Week 6, our Year 6 students experienced the first of their three day ‘Journey to Emmaus’ student leadership program. Day one was broken into two parts. In the morning session, the students reinterpreted scripture, shared their views on leadership and named the qualities they recognise in other leaders. In the afternoon sessions, the students prepared vegetables generously donated by our community. They worked collaboratively in small groups to produce over 14 litres of soup for Moore Street Day Centre. The soup was delivered to Moore Street in support of their evening soup run, helping to provide a warm home cooked meal for Adelaide’s homeless and most vulnerable. At the end of the day we gathered in prayer and the students reflected that they demonstrated leadership by preparing soup and that when we do something for others like the homeless, we feel happy too.
The second day of this parish leadership program will be held at Whitefriars Catholic School on Monday 12 September. We look forward to joining the Whitefriars Year 6 students, teachers and APRIM Josh Page as we continue on our three day experience. Further updates on the Year 6 engagement in this program will be provided in the Week 9 newsletter.
Social Justice Focus
This term, in support of Catholic Charities we are inviting toiletry and stationary donations towards the Hutt Street Appeal. If your family is able to contribute to the appeal, Hutt Street are seeking toiletry items such as; toothbrushes, toothpaste, combs, hairbrushes, hair products, deodorant, antiperspirant, razors, shaving cream or feminine hygiene products. Alternatively, you may prefer to donate a stationary item such as; textas, pencils, watercolours, crayons, rulers or erasers.
A white basket will be placed in each classroom and an additional basket will also be accessible to those visiting the front office. We will continue to invite donations until Friday 23 September (Week 9). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me via email matthew.harrison@smms.catholic.edu.au
ReLAT
Next week, our Year 4 students are scheduled to participate in a practice ReLAT (Religious Education Literacy Assessment Tool) on Wednesday 14 September (Week 8). The actual ReLAT assessment will be offered in Week 9. The assessment date will become available for scheduling once the practice assessment is complete.

Year 4/5 students have been learning about famous Italian landmarks.
They have been writing sentences in Italian about the landmarks and reading them.
Pronunciation and expression has been fantastic from all students.
During week 5 this term Aailyah represented the Western SAPSASA Soccer team at the State Soccer Championships at West Beach. Her team competed against other district teams throughout the state. Aailyah was chosen out of 60 girls who tried out for the Western team and from what we have heard from coaches, was an absolute star player! Congratulations Aailyah, the St Margaret Mary’s community are very proud of you!
This week on a magnificent day of sunshine, 67 students from Years 4-6 participated at the SACPSSA Touch Football Carnival at the Touch SA fields. Each of the 8 teams played with respect, great teamwork and most importantly had fun!
I would like to say a special thank you to Adam F, Lou B and Vutha B who came and helped coach a team. If it wasn’t for parents like them, our students wouldn’t get to experience days like these. I would also like to thank Mr Graham, Ms Troung and Ms Centofanti for all their support in making this a great day!
